The journey starts with a chick… or a couple hundred.
At Halverson Family Farm we offer two distinct types of pastured poultry. Cornish Cross which is the type of chicken you might expect to see at your local grocery store and Red Broilers which have a more proportional body type compared to Cornish Cross which carry a lot of their weight in the breasts.
Regardless of breed our chickens start out as chicks in our brooder boxes. They’re fed an organic and/or non-gmo grower ration we get from a local mill with plenty of fresh water. They’ll spend their first four weeks in these boxes while they grow and get ready for their journey outside.
Once they’re outside each of our birds gets to really spread out getting over 40 square feet of space each. With all this space they delight in scratching and pecking through the salad bar and smorgasbord at their little chicken feet - spreading their gifts everywhere they go.
Every few days the chickens eagerly migrate to a fresh section of pasture(with a little coaxing from the farmer) rushing past each other to get the choicest bits. Over the course of their life on our farm each chicken will have had access to the equivalent of ~300 square feet. Compare that to the less than 2 square feet(our best guess as the industrial farming sector tends to operate in the dark) that their factory farmed counterparts get.
We harvest our Cornish Cross at around 8-9 weeks of age and the Red Broilers run a little longer to around 13-14 weeks. All of our chickens are processed on our farm. This allows us to oversee the whole life of our chickens from cheeping chick to shrink bag to ensure our poultry is as unadulterated as the day they were laid.
We believe raising chickens in this way results in a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life for our chickens. Which manifests in the superior quality and flavor of the meat that makes it to your table.
